PhotoFit / US visa photo (DS-160)

Resize your photo for the US visa DS-160 upload

The DS-160 online form takes a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 KB. Crop your photo to a square, check the result, and download a file that meets those limits.

The file stays on your device. We aim a little under your limit so it passes whether the portal counts a KB as 1000 or 1024 bytes.

This tool fixes size, shape and file size only. The State Department also checks head size, position, background and expression, and may reject a photo that is technically the right size. Check the current rules and use the official photo tool if you need to.

How it works

  1. Add your photo

Choose a picture, drop it on the page or paste it. It opens on your device and is never uploaded.

  2. Set what the form asks for

Pick a preset or type the pixels and the KB limits. Drag to crop, and pinch, scroll or use the slider to zoom.

  3. Download the file

The result is checked against your limits before you download it.

Questions

What are the DS-160 digital photo requirements?

A square JPEG, at least 600 × 600 and at most 1200 × 1200 pixels, with a file size of 240 KB or less. The photo must also meet the State Department's rules for head position, background and recency.

Can I use a larger size such as 1000 × 1000?

Yes, anything from 600 to 1200 pixels square is accepted. Change the width and height fields above, and keep both numbers equal.

Does this check my face position?

No. It only sets the size, shape and file size. Use the guide oval to centre your head, and follow the official photo composition rules.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. PhotoFit resizes your photo inside your browser. The picture never leaves your device, so there is nothing to store or delete.

Why is my file a little under the limit?

Portals disagree on whether a kilobyte is 1000 or 1024 bytes. The tool stays slightly below your maximum and above your minimum so the file passes either way.

What if the form needs a minimum file size?

If a picture compresses below the minimum, the tool adds invisible padding to the JPEG until it reaches the minimum. The picture itself does not change.

Which pictures can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF. The result is always a JPEG, the format almost every upload form accepts. For iPhone photos in HEIC, share or save them as JPEG first, or open this page in Safari.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Drag with one finger to move the picture and pinch to zoom. The download button stays at the bottom of the screen.

Does it remove location data from my photo?

Yes. The picture is redrawn and saved as a new file, which drops location, camera and date information.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up, watermark or ads. Voluntary donations pay for hosting.

Keep it free

PhotoFit has no ads, no sign-up and no tracking. If it saved you a trip to the print shop, a small donation pays for hosting and keeps it that way.
